Dalam buku ukuran 24 x 30cm, setebal 384 halaman itu, ia mengajak kita menjelajahi kembali masa lampau kota yang pernah dijuluki ‘Ratu dari Timur’ ini, melalui bangunan-bangunan kuno yang sampai sekarang masih ada; baik yang sudah dipugar, dijadikan museum, maupun yang dibiarkan merana dimakan usia.
Buku Adolf Heuken ini juga mengajak kita beralih sejenak. Dari pesona gedung-gedung megah, ke peninggalan masa lampau – seperti wisma-wisma tuan tanah, masjid, gereja, kelenteng kuno, dengan latar-belakang aneka ragam.
Sekian banyak bangsa, suku, agama, budaya, memang sudah ikut menyumbang dalam pembentukan Kota Jakarta. Bertemunya aneka unsur itu kita lihat dalam pelbagai ‘keajaiban’. Antaranya tugu prasasti Hindu yang pernah dikeramatkan penduduk. Kumpulan arca Hindu yang dipuja dalam klenteng Tionghoa. Gereja Belanda yang diperuntukkan umat Protestan Portugis. Atau klenteng dengan keramat ‘Islam’ di dalamnya.
Buku klasik tentang tempat-tempat bersejarah di Jakarta ini berisi banyak gambar dan peta kuno berwarna. Setiap orang yang ingin mengenal ibukota RI sewajarnya memilik buku ini. Sudah terbit tujuh kali.

Jakarta, once the ‘Queen City of the East’, changes very fast. More and more building and objects of its past disappear in our time. But there is still much more to be seen than most people, even long time residents, are aware of. There are old mansions, colonial fortification, churches, mosques and Chinese temples with a colourful cosmopolitan background. Many races, nearly all great religions of our world, and most different cultures have contributed to the development of Jakarta. For centuries this city has been the centre of a web of sea-based trading posts scattered between Cape Town in South Africa and Surat in North India to the islet of Deshima in Japan. Textiles and indigo from India were traded for Indonesian spices, these in turn bought Chinese tea, silks and porcelains which were exchanged for the silver and copper of Japan. From Europe silver and gold coins were used to buy at very cheap prices all goods of the East in order to sell them in Amsterdam for big profits.
Besides being the centre of vast trading emporium, Jakarta developed more and more into the main city of the Indonesian archipelago.

This book leads the reader to what still remains of this colourful past in present-day Jakarta, which today as the capital of modern Indonesia again occupies a central position.
